Missing Margaret, Jimmy takes up bowling as a way to meet new friends. He joins the Banefield Bowling Club and also the Corstorphine Bowling Club, where he occasionally played with his older brother Bill.  Jimmy often said that Bill was the better player.

Jimmy likes nothing more than going on cruises all over the world, enjoying the excitement of seeing new places, and meeting new and old friends. By 2004 he has travelled so often that he is recognised as a "Most Travelled Passenger" by many of the cruise ships.
