He becomes a special constable for the Lothians and Borders C Division.  He spends many Friday nights helping to keep the City streets safe and orderly. He is promoted twice to sergeant and then inspector.  For one year he is appointed chairman of the C Division Specials Association and on leaving in 1980 becomes an honorary life member.
